honoring brian obie
Brian Obie has spent decades shaping Eugene’s business, civic, and cultural landscape. As a founding partner and investor in the 5th Street Public Market, he helped transform a small downtown project into a thriving six-block district that now draws millions of visitors each year. The Market District is home to more than 80 businesses, two boutique hotels, and the 127-unit Gordon Lofts, creating a vibrant model for urban placemaking.
Obie’s public service began in the 1970s on the Eugene Planning Commission and continued on the City Council before he served as Mayor from 1985 to 1988. He also served two terms as President of the University of Oregon Foundation and as President of the Oregon Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), contributing to statewide and regional civic initiatives.
In business, Obie helped grow Centennial Bank, which later merged with Umpqua Bank. He also founded Obie Media Corporation and expanded it to 32 offices across the U.S. and Canada before taking the company public on the NASDAQ and later completing its sale—an achievement that remains one of Eugene’s significant corporate success stories.
Today, as President and CEO of Obie Companies Inc., he oversees real estate and hospitality projects across Oregon and Idaho, focusing on mixed-use and residential developments that prioritize community spaces, art, and long-term value.
