It All Began
In June of 1846 Eugene E.
Skinner and his family founded a settlement on the banks
of the Willamette River in Oregon's lush Willamette
Valley, in those early days some called the settlement
Skinner's Mud-Hole. Did they ever lack vision!
In 1851 the Territorial
Legislature established Lane County, with Skinner's
settlement recognized as its center. And 11 years later,
in 1862, the settlement traded Skinner's last name for
his first, becoming officially incorporated as Eugene,
Oregon.
