Chamber and
Community Partners Join Forces to Improve Air Service
After a five year hiatus, United
Airlines mainline service will return to the Eugene Airport
starting March 30, 2008. The increase in service will bring
110-seat Boeing 737 aircraft back to the Eugene market,
providing passengers with more seat availability on larger
planes.
The new service was secured through the combined efforts of the
Eugene Airport and community partnership organizations worked
together in developing a marketing proposal for United Airlines.
The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Chamber of
Commerce, Convention & Visitors Association of Lane County
Oregon and Lane Metro Partnership contributed financial and
in-kind resources toward this success.
“Quality air service is crucial to our region’s economic
success” according to Chamber President Dave Hauser. “I’m
pleased that our Chamber could be a part of a unique
collaboration of economic development organizations that helped
bring full-sized jets back to the Eugene Airport.”
United Airlines was the first airline to provide commercial
service at the Eugene Airport in 1943, building on that service
to five daily Boeing 737 flights to San Francisco in 2002. In
January 2003, United Express service was brought in, utilizing
50-seat and 66-seat regional jets operated by SkyWest Airlines.
There are currently 382-available seats daily on the Eugene to
San Francisco route. The change to four United Airlines mainline
flights will provide an additional 58 seats a day, which
represents a 15% increase in service on that route.

Public Asked For
Input on Downtown Projects
The City of Eugene is sponsoring
a downtown drop-in style “info & input” session in the Bascom/Tykeson
Room of the Eugene Public Library today, Wednesday, Mar. 5
from 4-7pm. The public is invited to learn about and comment
on two main focus topics: the Downtown Zoning Review Project,
and the progress of redevelopment efforts for West Broadway.
The Downtown
Zoning Review project was initiated by City Council to address
elements in the land use code in order to facilitate the type of
development called for in the Downtown Plan. Significant public
involvement has identified seven priority topics for careful
review and possible revisions. The first phase of the project
focuses on three topics: 1) how much density is required and how
density is calculated, 2) limitations on surface parking, and 3)
limitations on new residential structures. These items were
chosen for review first because they could be addressed with
limited changes to the land use code.
The second phase will focus on the remaining four topics which
require more extensive public involvement and code revisions,
including: 1) changes to the bicycle parking standards, 2)
changes to the planning and zoning boundaries for downtown, 3)
the inclusion of green building concepts, and 4) a design review
process.
The discussion
about West Broadway redevelopment will focus on the partnership
between Beam Development and the City to rehabilitate the Centre
Court and Washburne Buildings and to construct a new building on
the vacant lot south of the Centre Court building on Willamette
Street.
Community
members are encouraged to attend to learn about the proposed
code changes, to hear an update on progress toward redevelopment
for West Broadway, and to express their views on these projects.
The City Council and staff want to ensure the projects to
reflect community priorities and values.
During the drop-in session, City staff from a variety of
departments will be available to provide information, answer
questions, and listen to comments. Information will be also
available about the sealed bidding process for the remaining
property options in the West Broadway Redevelopment area, and on
the current Request for Proposals on the 10th and Charnelton
site across from the Eugene Library.

Community Members Asked to Identify What Matters to Them
What makes a community healthy and vibrant? Tell us what you
think by participating in the
Healthy Community Survey.
There are many factors that influence the health and vitality of
our community, such as education, job opportunities and public
safety. Understanding what makes a community vibrant takes an
integrated approach, and that’s why the University of Oregon
Economics Department, Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce and United
Way of Lane County have joined together to develop the Healthy
Community Index – an exciting new tool that measures a variety
of factors affecting our citizens’ level of satisfaction within
the community.
We encourage you to click below to complete the Healthy
Community Index survey (if you have not already) and tell us
what is most important to you for a healthy community. The
survey takes between five and 10 minutes. Your response is
requested by March 5; once we close the survey, the results will
be compiled and a report will be released to the community in
May.
Thank you for sharing your opinion! Feel free to forward
this Update to your staff, associates, customer and community
members in the Eugene/Springfield area so that they may
participate in the survey as well.
