Stresses Diversity on City Boards and Commissions
The Local
Government Affairs Council of the Eugene Area Chamber of
Commerce asked the Eugene City Council to seek greater diversity
in the composition of appointed City boards and commissions. The
recommendation was based on an analysis of the current
composition of six influential City of Eugene boards and
commissions. The Chamber analysis revealed:
-
Overall,
65%, (29 of 45) of the board, commissions and advisory board
appointees reside in Wards 1, 2 and 3.
-
There
are as many non-city residents (4) serving on the City of
Eugene Board and Commissions referenced above as there are
total representatives from Wards 6, 7 and 8 combined.
-
There
are no Ward 8 representatives serving on any of the Board
and Commissions on any of the six more influential boards
and commissions as identified by the Chamber.
-
Nearly
75% of the at-large members of the City’s most influential
boards and commissions, the Planning Commission and Budget
Committee, reside in Wards 1, 2 & 3.
The Chamber
recommended the City Council
-
Make
geographic diversity a consideration in the selection of
members of City boards and commissions. Not the only
consideration, yet a point to consider when in the selection
process.
-
Develop
a strategy to increase the number of applicants in
underrepresented Wards.
-
Make
the board and commissions appointment process more user
friendly. The long lag time from application to service, the
occasional lack of civility in the Council interviews and
during the appointments and unclear expectations as to what
the majority of Council are looking for in a particular
applicant are all items we have heard as obstacles to
getting well qualified individuals to apply.
According
to Chamber President Dave Hauser, “If more people from Wards
across our community are recruited for committees they could
influence City Council policies and, at the same time, help
residents gain confidence about city proposals. That will result
in stronger community engagement and, as a result, more buy-in
for solutions by the public.”
A
copy of the Chamber’s communication to the City is available here.

Community Members Asked to Identify What Matters to Them
What makes a community healthy and vibrant? Tell us what you
think by participating in the
Healthy Community Survey.
There are many factors that influence the health and vitality of
our community, such as education, job opportunities and public
safety. Understanding what makes a community vibrant takes an
integrated approach, and that’s why the University of Oregon
Economics Department, Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce and United
Way of Lane County have joined together to develop the Healthy
Community Index – an exciting new tool that measures a variety
of factors affecting our citizens’ level of satisfaction within
the community.
We encourage you to click below to complete the Healthy
Community Index survey (if you have not already) and tell us
what is most important to you for a healthy community. The
survey takes between five and 10 minutes. Your response is
requested by March 5; once we close the survey, the results will
be compiled and a report will be released to the community in
May.
Thank you for sharing your opinion! Feel free to forward
this Update to your staff, associates, customer and community
members in the Eugene/Springfield area so that they may
participate in the survey as well.
